Wireless Domestic Metering

Case Study: Wireless Domestic Metering
The design brief for this project was to create a suite
of products and software to interface residential and
commercial utility meters via modems to a central
software scheduling and processing database.

The Challenge
To create a multi-personality module that would interface
with a range of electricity, gas and water meters and
transmit wirelessly to eliminate installation costs.
To design a means of communicating over a PSTN to relay
data back to a central server
To provide trends analysis software to interpret results for
loyalty and marketing use. To create a user interface to report power usage and for
suppliers to advertise ‘buy now' low price power tariffs
based on client usage profiles
MLE Value Add
Ability to research and reverse engineer protocols used in
several utility meters; designing a bespoke V22 modem that can be used over a
PSTN to reduce cost and offer an OEM solution and using an
innovative processor-based power supply design to achieve low standby operation and long battery life.

Outcomes
A full proof-of-concept system was installed in a
residential home running months of test data.
Running to spec and delivered to cost
Delighted client!
