Power Supply Design UK

Power supply design requires understanding of many aspects of electronics design: thermal design, control theory, control circuits that are immune to high dv/dt & impulse currents are all required with expert layout in order to create a high performance power supply with low EMC.

Based in the UK, we have been involved in DC-DC converter design for numerous applications and power/voltage ratings (mW to 100kW), whether stand alone, rack or rail mounted.

We have wide experience of all DC-DC converter technologies (square-wave, series - or linear - regulator, buck regulator, forward and flyback converters etc), according to specification We design for ultra high efficiency with low thermal and electrical stress factors, wide range input voltage and excellent line and load regulation. Surface mount technology is commonly used and, where appropriate, complex converters incorporate DSP microcontrollers to provide complex control of multiple output supplies.

Given our wide electronic design experience (of both systems and components) including communications and interfaces, we can provide designs that incorporate remote diagnostics informing the user/system of component status such as power failure, over-current & over-temperature.

EMC is an important aspect in dc-dc converter design and we have considerable expertise in this area. In many competitor's units, "anti-noise'' components are added on a trial-and-error basis during the final stage of the development process when EMC is found to exceed the compliance limits (e.g., Defstan 59-41 or MIL 416), inevitably adding to the cost of production. Our power supply design philosophy fully incorporates EMC considerations from the initial concept and we have in-house pre-compliance test equipment to aid the development process.

Applications
Using latest ferrite materials it is possible to run PWM convertors at increasingly higher operating frequencies and power densities. We also have extensive experience in designing uninterruptible power supply design, including off line UPS, line interactive, true on line double conversion, single phase, three phase and also for AC & DC loads, switch mode systems, power control / monitoring and motor & drive control applications.
