OMAP 3530 and Beagle Board
It's not every day you come across a processor with the power of a desktop PC that's small and low power. So last month when our friendly Texas Instruments Reps were in and told us about the OMAP35x and the Beagle Board we got very excited!
The OMAP3530 is basically two devices on one chip. The first is a powerful TI C64x DSP with fast number-crunching abilities. The second half is a new ARM Cortex A8 600Mhz core, this new ARM Core offers unprecedented performance claiming 4 times the performance compared to current ARM9 devices used in the previous DaVinci range.
Not content with cramming all of that functionality into a small chip, it also has a graphics accelerator from PowerVR. This small piece of silicon is capable of rendering photo realistic 3D scenes and animation. Great for the next generation of user interfaces to compete with the iPhone!
To showcase the OMAP3530 speed TI has teamed up the open source community and Digikey to release the Beagle Board (www.beagleboard.org). The beagle board is basically a single board computer, offering audio in/out, Digital Video, SD Card Socket and USB. Add Linux and the beagle is a fully functional PC! A benefit of using Linux is the driver support is fantastic - a huge number of USB devices "Just work". This gives us a large base on which we can start building products for our clients.
