MLE’s work features on Channel 4!

In case you missed Channel 4’s Big Art programme, it recently featured the Source – an electronic moving sculpture conceived by urban artists Greyworld , which dominates the London Stock Exchange.

As you might have already seen from our case studies , MLE developed the software and electronics which control this impressive piece of art. The sculpture is a kinetic artwork consisting of 729 motorised spheres arranged in a 9x9x9 matrix. Spheres can move from floor level to the full 32 metres height of the main atrium and each one takes power from its supporting wires, which also act as the communications line for signalling to the spheres how they should behave.

MLE were initially contracted purely to manufacture The Source's 2000+ printed circuit boards (PCBs) for the moving sculpture, however it wasn't long before both companies realised there was a need for further electronics development, as technical difficulties with the original design began presenting themselves.  We actually ended up redesigning the PCBs in the end to make them easier for production too – one of the many benefits of having in-house manufacturing facilities is an excellent line of communications between our design engineers and our production experts, making design for manufacture that much simpler.

You can see Channel 4’s programme on its 4oD website until the end of June 2009.
