Fuel Cell PSU Converter and Controller
Case Study: Fuel Cell PSU Converter & Controller.
Fuel cells are devices which use an electro chemical conversion to generate electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen, the output from the reaction between the two being H2 and O2 being a free electron & water. As long as the fuel cell is supplied with the two gases then electricity and water are freely produced.
The output from the fuel cell has a complex transfer function. For the majority of applications, to make the output power from a fuel cell usable, it is necessary to have a DC-DC converter between the load and the fuel cell. The control of this DC-DC converter is ideally performed by a digital DSP controller.
MLE have a wide experience of designing converters for this kind of application.
Using the micro stepping PWM peripherals of the TI range of DSPs and the ample power of the DSP processor, we can create the complex control loops required for this application.
Additionally with high frequency switching of FETs we can use miniaturised inductors and devices mounted on a ceramic substrate to create very compact fuel cell controllers.
